Few reserves in South Africa tell a rewilding story as compelling as Babanango Game Reserve. Set in the upper White Umfolozi River Valley in the heart of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, this 20,000-hectare wilderness was once degraded by decades of overgrazing and hunting. Today it is one of the most ambitious rewilding projects undertaken in Southern Africa, with over 4,000 large mammals selectively sourced and sensitively reintroduced to landscapes where they once roamed freely. In June 2023, the return of the African elephant completed Babanango's official Big Five status, joining lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. The reserve's dramatic topography, shaped by an 800-metre altitude difference between mountain and valley, creates a landscape of granite outcrops, mistbelt grasslands and thornveld unlike almost anywhere else in the region.
Beyond the Big Five, Babanango protects the critically endangered black rhino and oribi, diverse cat species including cheetah, serval and caracal, and more than 330 recorded bird species, with numbers still steadily climbing each season. Steeped in Zulu history, with the Anglo-Zulu War battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift close by, Babanango offers travellers a rare safari layered with genuine conservation purpose, deep cultural heritage and dramatic, unspoiled wilderness.

Where to stay at Babanango Game Reserve
Madwaleni River Lodge is an award-winning 5-star tented camp on the White Umfolozi River's southern bank. Its name means "the place of the rock" in isiZulu, reflecting the reserve's granoliths. Unfenced, it sleeps up to 24 guests across twelve tents, seven with private plunge pools. Highlights include a riverside gym, a history-filled library, in-room spa treatments and a 2,000-bottle wine cellar, all overlooking the river below.
Zulu Rock Lodge, on a cliff-edge site high on the reserve, is a 4-star retreat with panoramic valley views. It sleeps up to 16 guests across six villa-style suites and a family villa, with an elevated pool and no fences separating guests from wildlife roaming the valley. Its Romance Suite, furthest from the main lodge, includes a private pool, sun loungers and a swing bed overlooking the view below.
Valley Lodge, a 4-star homestead-style property designed with families in mind, hosts up to 18 guests across nine rooms, including two family rooms with sleeper couches for children under 12. Guests enjoy infinity and splash pools, an evening boma with a fire pit, and a separate self-catering Hill Top House sleeping up to six.
Matatane Camp offers a genuinely rustic bush experience, with seven chalets and two satellite tented camps of Meru-style canvas tents, each with en-suite bathrooms. Guests self-cater or enjoy full board with home-cooked meals; game drives here must be booked separately, departing from Zulu Rock Hub some 15 kilometres away.
